DNA TESTING
                                          What you need to know

Genetic Testing - A Medical Breakthrough?

Genetic testing covers a very wide range of applications. It can be used to analyze DNA, chromosomes, proteins, and detect inherited disorders in people.

You can choose to have genetic testing done any time but usually is only needed when a doctor suspects you might be suffering from some sort of inherited disease. They do genetic testing a lot like DNA testing. They usually swab your cheek for cells and send it in for analysis. Many Hospitals and universities are currently engaged in genetic testing that involves discovering new genes and seeing what role they play in the human body. Many think this could lead to a cure for baldness, obesity, and the potential for other ailments.

Genetic testing is growing in leaps and bounds and is making all kinds of discoveries on a regular basis. Many news programs have topics that deal with genetics from mutations to newly discovered genes. The basis of genetic testing starts with DNA. After they get a sample, instead of making a profile, they analyze it from top to bottom looking for changes or anomalies that shouldn't be there. They compare it to normal healthy DNA samples and see what the difference is. Then they can begin the process of trying to find out what that particular gene is responsible. This is an incredibly long process that costs a lot of money and a lot of manpower.

Genetic testing is done on almost all babies born in the United States. This is a screening to look for any inherited disorders and prepare parents for possible treatment options and to see if they are a carrier for any other disorders. Many times, genetic disorders are carried by people but they don't show themselves and people don't know they carry it. It takes two of that gene to create the disorder so on the chance two people that carry the same gene, there is a great chance their child will have that disorder while they do not.

Genetic testing is usually recommended by a doctor but many private facilities have opened up around the world that will do different types of testing for your average person. You can be checked for breast cancer predisposition, to many other types of potentially harmful disorders. If you decide to do this, it's a good idea to speak to medical professionals or gene counselors about the results you get back. You don't want to get upset over something because you misinterpreted the information.

Check the validity of a company before you decide to let them do any genetic testing on you or someone you know. Unfortunately, some places thrive by taking money from people and giving them something generic in return. Do your research and you should be fine.
